Rivers: The Potomac River
A Step Up in Eastern West Virginia
The Potomac River in eastern West Virginia is one of the fastest-growing river sports destinations in the state, thanks to controlled releases from Jennings Randolph Dam that provide first-class rafting challenges in spring and fall.
Close to Washington, Baltimore and other East Coast population centers, it's a perfect step up from the milder waters of the Shenandoah where many Eastern rafters get started.
Raft trips start at Barnum, W.Va., and travel seven miles over an impressive series of rapids that come one right after the other. Class III+ rapids along the way create six-foot wave trains that require even veteran river-runners to stay focused. There are also a number of gentle pools along the way, which provide great spots for swimming, cliff jumping and just taking in the scenery.
Along with rafting, ducky trips and kayaking also are offered by area outfitters.
