River Packages
In West Virginia, the fun doesn't stop when you step onshore. Visitors who once darted in and out of the state for a quick trip downriver are discovering that whitewater can be the centerpiece of a complete vacation, with loads of great activities off the river as well.
Most outfitters now offer complete packages that let you take advantage of all of the natural beauty and great attractions in the Mountain State. They'll help you set up an itinerary, get your gear, and help you get to where you want to go. And at day's end, you can dine out in high style or cook out on the campfire - the choice is yours! Here's just a sampling of some of the great activities you can combine with your whitewater adventure, for an even better getaway:
Overnight Trips
A great way to enhance your whitewater experience is to take advantage of one of the many overnight trips offered by West Virginia outfitters. Pull off the river to a fully set-up, modern campsite, enjoy a great meal and then gather by the fire as night falls to relive the day's memories. Then, it's up in the morning for more fun on the river!
Combo Trips
The proximity of many of West Virginia's best whitewater rivers, and their varied stretches, makes this a popular option. For the truly adventurous, a Gauley-New river combo packs maximum whitewater action into a single day or two consecutive days. An Upper and Lower Gauley combo will let you experience everything from thunderous rapids to unparalleled scenery. And if you're just getting your feet wet, the Upper New River is a great place to start, followed by the world-class thrills of the Lower New.
Climbing Combos
The spectacular New River Gorge isn't just home to some of America's best whitewater - it's also one of the nation's top climbing areas. Take in the scenic cliffs from the river, then get a hawk's-eye view of all the action from up top. In the eastern portion of the state, Seneca Rocks is one of the nation's top climbing destinations and can easily be combined with a trip on the South Branch.
Cycling Combos
West Virginia is a bicyclist's paradise, and it isn't all tough uphill going either! With one of the nation's best-developed recreational trail systems - many on converted railroad lines - you don't have to conquer the wilderness to cruise it. And if road biking is more your style, where better than on West Virginia's famed "country Roads?"
Float & Fishing Trips
There's great action just below the surface, too, on all of West Virginia's great rafting rivers, plus hundreds of smaller streams that will delight the most avid fly fisherman. Bass and trophy-sized muskies lurk just below you on a river float trip, while rainbow and golden trout are ready to rise to the surface of both river and stream. And for a great pack-in fishing trip, ask about the Cranberry Wilderness - it's within easy reach of many outfitters.
Canoeing and Tubing
Take in the scenery at a more leisurely pace on a canoe or tubing trip down a placid stretch of the South Branch or the Shenandoah. The Greenbrier River, close to the southern West Virginia rafting centers, is also a great canoeing and tubing river, perfect for the whole family.
