The Upper Gauley
Are You Ready For the Ultimate?
For rafters and kayakers worldwide, it doesn't get any better than the Gauley. Whether you hit it during the annual fall "Gauley Season" or are lucky enough to catch it at high water during other months, rafting the Upper Gauley River is an experience you'll never forget.
Dropping more than 668 feet through 28 miles of rugged terrain, The Gauley's complex stretch of whitewater features more than 100 rapids with a steep gradient, technical runs, an incredible volume of water and huge waves. Its vigorous rapids, scenic quality and inaccessibility combine to draw rafters from across America and beyond. The Gauley is consistently ranked as one of the world's Top 10 rafting rivers.
The Upper Gauley offers tremendous Class III to V+ drops in steep, turbulent chutes such as Pillow Rock, Iron Ring and Sweet's Falls, and rocky routes that demand constant maneuvering such as Lost Paddle and Shipwreck. This section of the river requires experience, concentration and teamwork - plus maybe just a touch of craziness, too! The Upper Gauley is serious business and most companies require a minimum age of 16.
The Ride of Your Life
In the fall, this breath-taking roller-coaster ride is driven by controlled releases from Summersville Dam. These fearsome yet precise releases also make the Gauley a remarkably consistent river during the fall season, guaranteed to give you the ride of your life.
Spring and summer trips, which run periodically depending on water conditions, can be even more varied and adventurous. There are few experiences like being on the Upper Gauley while a big storm miles away pushes the river up under you, accelerating your raft and rocketing you toward a whitewater explosion at its climax.
If you've rafted the others and are ready for more, the Upper Gauley is the place to be this season!
